Hot Work involves wide-ranging activities that comprise cutting, welding, thermit welding, brazing, soldering, grinding, thermal spraying. Whenever these activities are executed, accidents are most significant, Eyes and skin can be burned, hearing can be damaged and an electric shock can be hazardous

Hot work can cause a fire which can result inexplosions, thus, it’s important to take precautions to prevent burn injuries. Always make sure that there are no flammable vapors or combustible materials near your hot work area; use guards to “confine the heat, sparks, and slag, and to protect the immovable fire hazards.

There should be a designated area for hot work and it shouldhave a safeclear radius of combustibles typically maintained. If combustibles are not repositioned, wet down, or protected with welding curtains or blankets, the hot sparks from welding can easily lead to an explosion.

Hot work safety can also be displayed in the workplace to remind workers of safety precautions when performing welding, grinding, cutting, soldering, etc. work at all times.

  • A hot work permit should be followed for work such as welding, cutting, grinding, vehicle entry into oil and gas facilities.
  • The hot work area should be utilized by skilled welders, gas cutters, and fitters for hot work in a restricted area.
  • All the combustible or flammable materials from the area should be cleared.
  • Be sure to purge piping and equipment carrying flammable materials.
  • Make sure that the area is properly cleaned before the work commences.
  • Always execute welding, grinding, cutting work inside the welding booth only to contain the sparks.
  • Aways ensure that fire extinguishers and charged fire hose near are kept accessible to hot work booth.

Apart from the hot work area, employees should also wear the right Personal Protective Equipment i.e (PPE)

  • Proper eye protection is required to shield against sparks, molten metal, and welder’s flash
  • Hearing protection for ears
  • Clothing should be made of heat-resistant materials, such as an apron made of leather.
  • Safety boots are a must.
  • Leather Gloves that are made with flameproof fabric.
  • Respiratory protection so that toxic chemicals and gases shouldn’t enter your lungs.
  • Welding Helmet with tinned black glass as per statutory standards for eye protection while doing welding.
  • Face Sheilds for cutting, and grinding purposes.
